Meet our Partners: Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) is contributing to the Planet4Health project by simulating hydrometeorological variables, such as streamflow and soil moisture, using the mHM model. Their team of experts will develop advanced monitoring systems and apply machine-learning techniques to support various case studies within the project. UFZ’s expertise in hydrological modeling and extreme event analysis contributes to the development of early warning systems for public health protection.

UFZ’s role in the project

In the Planet4Health project, UFZ team will simulate hydrometeorological variables, with a focus on streamflow and soil moisture, at a high spatiotemporal resolution employing the [mHM] model. Additionally, they will develop a monitoring system for various case studies within the project by applying advanced machine-learning techniques.

About UFZ

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ is a leading research institution in Germany, renowned for its pioneering contributions to environmental science. Their [Stochastic and Land Surface Hydrology] group at the [Department of Computational Hydrosystems] specialises in hydrological modelling and seasonal predictions, as well as extreme event analysis such as drought or flood analysis, and utilises high-performance computing to enhance early warning systems.

Quote about the project

“At UFZ, our primary objective within the Planet4Health project is to provide high-resolution hydrometeorological data and simulations covering historical periods, climate projections, and seasonal forecasts. By collaborating closely with project partners, we aim to establish a robust monitoring system, implement impact models, and develop an advanced early warning system through the application of cutting-edge machine learning techniques.”
